I have recently read and reviewed Before I Die, a novel by Jenny Downham. It is a story about death, love, family, and about learning to accept the inevitable.
Sixteen year old Tessa Scott has cancer. She and everyone around her knows in the beginning of the book that she only has little time left to live. And she wants to live as much as she can before she dies.
Tessa has a list of things she wants to do and experience. Sex is first on the list. It turns out, as one can imagine, not to be the most enjoyable thing ever. But Tessa goes on with the list – soon with the help of Adam, the boy next door...
This is a sad story, but still funny at times. It feels realistic, and better than many other books in the same genre.
Last year I reviewed the book by Ray Kluun, which is a best-seller. It is said to be one of the saddest books ever written. Eh?! I said that it was a close to badly written book, very boring at times, with more information about the main character’s genitals than I would ever have asked for.
Sad? Yes, of course, but... a sad story and some kind of dramatic conflict (in this case, a man who is notoriously incapable of being faithful to one woman) is not enough.
I asked myself if it was a male thing, perhaps? But I guess not, since I’ve read many reviews written by women. They like it, for some reason.
Then is it a straight thing? Is that why I’m bored with Kluun’s male protagonist and his sexual adventures?
No, that can’t be it. I do not object to heterosexual writing in general. And the love story in Before I Die is totally straight. Well, I don’t know. I can relate to Tessa, anyway.
No, the thing is, Jenny Downham is a good writer, the book is well written. It is certainly not sensational, but it’s perfectly readable. I like how the nature and scenery are reflecting and is reflected by Tessa’s mood. I like how the author works with contrasts in the themes. Birth and death, sunshine and rain, the different attitudes with friends, boys and family, Adam’s mother and Tessa’s... These are quite simple and obvious things, but Downham handles them well, she makes a real effort with the writing and it shows.
The book has it’s sentimental moments, but that is inevitable. Death is inevitable, sad, painful, and serious.
That makes death a very good topic for a novelist. As Ray Kluun and others prove, it isn’t even that necessary to be a good novelist to sell many books and become very popular, if you write a sad story about death.
Before I Die is Jenny Downham’s first novel. I am curious about what she’ll do next... when she, hopefully, chooses another theme for her next work.
